Sound, Smoke & State Street
For the Food & Nightlife Explorer
Start the afternoon at South Holston Lake near Bristol. The drive along the lake in fall is slow and stunning, and the South Holston Dam overlook gives you one of the best foliage views in the region. Southern Living has named Bristol one of its "Ten Prettiest Places for Fall Foliage," and it's easy to see why when you're standing above the water with the Cherokee National Forest stretching out on all sides.
From there, make your way to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum while the afternoon is still on your side. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday until 6 p.m. and Sunday until 5 p.m.; closed Mondays. The story of the 1927 Bristol Sessions deserves more than a quick pass-through. Allow an hour, especially if rotating Smithsonian exhibits are on display.
Move into the evening on State Street with dinner and drinks that reflect where you are. Before you settle in for the night, follow the Bristol Pumpkin Spice Latte Trail, an Explore Bristol initiative that guides visitors through participating downtown cafes, bakeries, and eateries serving seasonal pumpkin-spiced drinks and treats each fall. It is a fun, low-key way to explore the blocks before dinner. 620 State delivers upscale casual Asian-fusion, and Stateline Bar & Grill brings a traditional pub feel with live energy as the night picks up. Either way, let the evening carry itself. Live music on State Street is a regular feature on fall weekends, and the walkable downtown grid makes it easy to move between stops without a plan.
If you're planning a visit to Kingsport on October 10, Racks by the Tracks returns to Main Street for 2026, bringing BBQ competition, craft beer tasting, and live music to the heart of downtown. It's one of the region's most-anticipated one-day festivals and a natural extension of the food and nightlife spirit of this itinerary.
