Thursday: A Lesson in History
Focus: Small Town History
Morning
Grab coffee and a locally made pastry from South Fork Coffee in Bluff City before driving west to Piney Flats for Rocky Mount State Historic Site. Step back into 1791 at the territorial capital of the Southwest Territory. It’s a "living history" moment that feels worlds away from the roar of engines.
Lunch
Stop by Hickory Tree Grocery Store for local chat and fresh-from-the-grill burgers with daily specials. Described as a "hidden gem," the store offers a nostalgic, old-timey experience often compared to a classic Southern diner scene. The interior features farm-oriented decorations and a community-focused layout where locals often gather to share stories. Historically, the building once housed an auto shop and feed barn, and in the 1970s, it was a known spot for playing bluegrass music around a wood stove.
Afternoon
Drive along the South Holston River to Osceola Island for a serene escape through walking trails and native wildlife. This is one of the top fly-fishing spots in the country—the serene turquoise water is the ultimate pre-race reset. Then head to nearby Blountville for a tour to hear the stories of the Old Deery Inn.
Dinner
Grab a burger in Blountville at Bond-O Burgers followed by a local craft brew at The South Fork Taphouse. It’s the perfect way to see the county's quieter side.
