Begin your fall day the way Sullivan County's story begins, in Historic Blountville. The courthouse square takes on a different character in autumn, when the surrounding trees turn and the pace of the county seat slows to something almost unhurried. Walk the square, stop by the Old Deery Inn, and take a moment at the Department of Archives beside the Courthouse if you want to dig into the people who shaped this corner of Tennessee. Blountville has been the county seat since 1779, and it still feels like a place that knows its own history.
From there, take the short drive to Rocky Mount State Historic Site in Piney Flats. Fall is one of the best times to visit. The cooler air suits the living-history interpretation, the heritage animals are active, and the grounds carry a quieter, late-season character. Tours run Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; verify hours before visiting, as times can vary seasonally.
Continue into Kingsport and check the calendar for a stop at Exchange Place Living History Farm. Open to the public for special events only, Exchange Place's flagship fall offering is the Fall Folk Arts Festival, typically held the last weekend of September. The farmstead comes alive with artisan demonstrations, old-time music, sorghum making, blacksmithing, open hearth cooking, and children's activities, a genuine harvest experience rooted in 1850s Appalachian farm life. If your visit doesn't align with the festival, tours can be arranged by appointment.
End your afternoon in downtown Kingsport. Walk the Kingsport Mural Trail to take in public art that tells the story of the city one wall at a time, then settle into dinner at one of the locally owned spots that give downtown its character. If your visit falls on a Saturday or Sunday between September and October, the Netherland Inn opens its doors free of charge from 2 to 5 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 3:30. One of the only National Register sites to have served as both a boatyard and a stagecoach stop, it's a fitting final note for a day built around Sullivan County's story.
