Fall Itinerary #2

High Ground & Hard Miles

For the Outdoor Adventurer

Start early at Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium in Kingsport, Tennessee's largest city-owned park at 3,550 acres. Fall transforms Bays Mountain in a way few places in the region can match. The miles of ridgeline and woodland trails wind through hardwood canopy that peaks in mid-to-late October, and the hike to the Bays Mountain Fire Tower earns you sweeping views of the color spread across the surrounding valley. Put in a few miles on the trail system in the morning, then time a planetarium show for the afternoon when the theater opens. On weekdays, planetarium shows begin at 4 p.m.; weekend scheduling offers more flexibility.

From Kingsport, head toward Bristol and make your way to South Holston Dam. The overlook at the dam is one of the most underrated fall foliage vantage points in Northeast Tennessee. You're surrounded by pristine water and hundreds of miles of untouched shoreline filled with brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows. If you want to extend the time outdoors, the Weir Dam and Osceola Island loop trail is a 1.8-mile walk that keeps you close to the river while giving you a chance to slow down between stops.

Before heading into Bristol, make time for a stop at Bristol Caverns, one of Tennessee's oldest natural attractions. Formed over hundreds of millions of years, the caverns offer a guided underground experience at a constant 58 degrees, which feels like a different world entirely after a morning on the trail. Located just minutes from the South Holston corridor, it is an easy and memorable addition to the day. Tours run Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.

In the afternoon, make your way to Steele Creek Park, more than 2,200 acres and Tennessee's third-largest municipal park. The 52-acre lake at the center of the park is ringed by knobs and hills that peak with color in late October, and the hiking, biking, disc golf, and kayaking options give you one last stretch of activity before calling it a day. Grab dinner in downtown Bristol before heading out.
